Red Shirts...

You may have noticed Bangkok on the news for the last six weeks. The Red Shirts are still barricaded in the shopping district of Silom whilst increasingly the Yellow Shirts and 'multi-coloured' shirts are starting to vent their frustration at this anti-government movement. To be honest, unless television or the internet existed, we have seen nothing of it and are pretty unaffected by these events unless we have to go into the city for whatever reason. Personally, I'm quite surprised the Red Shirts are still going strong after Thaksin was given most of his money back by the government. There were reports that the poor were being paid a sum of money to come down to march in Bangkok to put pressure on the government to release his funds. Most of them have gone now leaving the hardcore behind but they are still numbering in the thousands. Sadly, just after our wedding in South Africa, 'terrorists' killed 25 people in Bangkok and a few days ago one person was reportedly killed by a grenade attack in Silom. These events are tragic and we are noticing a subdued atmosphere in Thailand at the moment. If we were to start focussing on the political tensions in this country, we'd have to start a new blog as the intricacies of recent Thai political history demand more than a few thousand words! Understandably a travel blog will have to report on the current affairs of any country the author visits, so we will write about the current tensions from our viewpoint. Please understand that, unless we decide to take our camera's into the city centre, we know as much as you do. I'd prefer to write about what we've experienced first hand. If you want to follow this closely then I recommend you follow 'legalnomads' on Twitter. This journalist has been right in there since day one and regularly updates what she sees and hears.

Ok, back to my writing on our recent trip to South Africa (and Kruger Park) to get married...yeah, I know it's not Asia so it looks like I'll have to change this blog's subtitle. I'll hopefully post as soon as my lovely WIFE recovers from her current bout of bronchitis.
